Soda Maker compatibility: Which cylinders can you use?

 

 

When someone buys asoda maker for the first time, the question about the cylinders usually comes too late. You get home with your Congas Bubble, your Aarke, your Osmaris, or your SodaStream, you christen it with the included cylinder, and when it runs out, you realize you need to understand a bit more than you thought.

The good news is that the system is simpler than it seems. And understanding it well can save you a lot of money.

 

The thread standard that changes everything

Most domestic gas generators on the market use a connection system called a CGA-320 standard thread — or simply a standard thread. It's exactly the same as connecting a CO2 cylinder: there's a universal thread that allows the cylinder to fit any machine designed to receive it.

This means that if your soda maker has a standard thread, you are not required to buy cylinders from the brand of your machine. You can use cylinders from any supplier that uses the same system, including Congas.

The exception—and it must be mentioned to be honest—is some SodaStream models that introduced their own bayonet system called Quick Connect. These models only work with genuine SodaStream cylinders. Below you'll find the complete table by make and model.

If you're unsure about your specific model, the quickest way to check is to look at the cylinder connection. If it has a visible metal thread on the top of the cylinder that you manually screw into the machine, it's a standard thread. If the cylinder snaps into place with a quick twist and there's no visible thread, it's probably SodaStream's Quick Connect system.

 

How to know for sure if your gas maker is compatible

Three ways to check it quickly:

1.     Look in the manual for the term 'standard thread', 'standard valve', or 'CGA-320'. If any of those appear, you are compatible.

2.     Look at the cylinder connection that came with the machine. If it has a visible metal thread that you screw on manually, it's standard.

Why are brand-name cylinders more expensive? The question no one explains.

If you own a SodaStream, you'll have noticed that their official cylinders cost around €20-30 at El Corte Inglés or their online store. The same applies to Aarke. The obvious question is: why?
